To be honest, I welcome the regulation. For me, it's about looking after Canadian creators, and the whole "the nasty government is coming for your free speech" is twaddle.

"it's about looking after Canadian creators"

What do you mean by this?

"and the whole "the nasty government is coming for your free speech" is twaddle."

Can you please expand on this too?

Ultimately the general idea of this bill is that by getting tech giants to register they'll have to pay for the Canadian content they're getting traffic from that's on their platforms in some capacity. That payment is ideally supposed to go back to creators who are producing the content being distributed on those platforms. Thats the main way they'd hope to see podcast creators being looked after.

It's a simple and pretty optimistic concept, but gets tricky when you start to pick it apart, so we'll see what happens next. All we know for now is that those platforms need to register, which is literally just submitting their name and address to the CRTC at this point lol.

In terms of the free speech being twaddle -- for me it comes down to the idea that, because of what we saw with Meta pulling out of Canadian news and Canadian's not being able to access that content on Facebook and Instagram, the same thing could happen with podcasts, and limiting where and how people can conduct "free speech", which to me is a bit of a stretch.

These are private companies deciding how they want to play ball at the end of the day, and if they don't wanna support Canadian content, they're allowed to do that -- as much as it sucks. I think people wanna blame the governement for essentially forcing tech giants to decide whether or not they want to playball, and like Michael Geist said, in principle it does go against free speech regulation, but when it comes to podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and Apple are the top 3 distrubtion platforms being used by Canadians, which is also about 37% of the population, so I don't see why they'd realistically up and leave since the fees they'd pay to the CRTC are likely going to be a drop in the bucket.

Many folks see this move as a "bureaucratization of today's most dynamic spaces for creativity and expression" (https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/bill-c-11-a-threat-to-freedom-of-expression-817644589.html) , and for some people that just screams "anti-free speech". For other people, like myself and I think Danny included, it seems a bit dramatic lol

Hope this helps!!
