Hihi!! Here’s the thing; I know A LOT of podcasters in Canada aren’t here to go pro as a producer or host. They’re busy making waves in their own industries and using podcasting to spread their important messages.
Is that you?
Pop your pod in this thread and share your mission. I want to check it out and feature it on Pod the North!
Hi Kattie! Thanks for all the awesome work you're putting into promoting Canadian podcasts. I saw your talk on International Podcast Day and was impressed by the insights and experience you have.
I've been part of a podcast production duo since 2020 (Audiobook Reviews in Five), and after 100 episodes, we kicked off a new show this year, Access Ideas: https://accessideas.captivate.fm/listen
I work in Corporate Communications by day, so the podcast is my creative outlet and I'd love to connect with you.
Hey Kattie, So glad you've taken on the maple syrup beat of pods!
I've been working in and around podcasts for about a decade...between dreaming of them, to making them, now to writing about them - and working to create a community.
My goal is to help build up the excitement around narrative storytelling podcasts.
I want what for narrative podcasts what indie film, pickleball, and graffiti art have - they became a thing, all on their own. Same but different than other things like them.
So I started a substack newsletter! It's called Bingeworthy, just for narrative podcasts that are just that good.
Thanks for being such an active advocate for Canadian Podcasters, Kattie! :-)
My podcast is called, Think Queerly. I've been publishing since June 2018 and have created 241 episodes to date. https://thinkqueerlypodcast.com
Here's the show description:
"Think Queerly is a thought leadership podcast by Writer & Mind-Mastery Coach, Darren Stehle that cultivates inclusion, understanding, and social evolution for a more accepting, equitable, and humane world. Darren explores LGBTQ2S+ history and social justice, and he speaks with other queer leaders who are working to make a meaningful difference in their communities and for the world."
Thanks for giving me - and all the other awesome Canadians here - a chance to share my podcast with the world...
Hailing from Calgary, AB, I host a podcast called "Jeff Does Vegas".
My so-called "real job" gives me lots of opportunity to travel and one of my favourite spots is Las Vegas. I started going there on a regular basis back in 2015 and since then, I've lost count of the number of times I've been there. I discovered I was becoming the de facto "Vegas expert" among my friends, so I decided to roll that into a podcast which has become a true passion project.
I've had discussions with numerous Las Vegas performers & headliners, I've chatted with experts in all sorts of Vegas-related fields, and I've even taken a walk on the "sinful side" of Sin City and done interviews with an Escort & an Exotic Dancer. In addition to all that, I've released numerous "Trip Report" episodes featuring reviews of hotels, casinos, restaurants, attractions and shows.
Vegas history is a big passion of mine as well and I worked on a spin-off podcast called "Sin City Stories" which featured deep dives into some of Las Vegas's most historic events (including the MGM Grand Fire in 1980, the October 1/2017 shooting, and Nevada's atomic history).
My podcast is called, "Simplest State," and is still very much a work in progress, but I'll have time to fill in the (many) gaps, soon!
Only 4 episodes (1500 downloads) so far but am in process of editing the 5th. Simplest State is on most platforms, including Podbean, Apple, YouTube, I Heart Radio, Spotify, Google, Podchaser, etc.
I host a true crime podcast that focuses on in-depth victim focused story telling. I'm working on my 5th season since launching in 2020. I've hit Canada's #1 Apple podcast spot, won a Webster award, & am now nominated for a Canpod award too. But more than that, my work helps push investigations forward while shining a light on cold cases and some under reported stories as well. best of luck with Pod the North (great title btw) lp
Hi Kattie! Love your Newsletter and thank-you for the shout-out <3
Kristen and I host Pullback and our mission is to help folks have better access to the information necessary to align consumer choices with personal moral values (or, TLDR; we talk about consumer ethics ;)) Kristen has a PhD in studying the non-profit sector and I am sometimes funny.
Love that I can read all of these other fabulous responses from fellow Canadian pods!
Hi Kattie! Thanks for the kind review on our pod! I appreciate it very much!
I co-host Dork Matters with Lexi Hunt. It’s a dorky podcast, for dorks. It’s not particularly niche, which I keep telling myself is very brave in 2022. But we use dorking out as vehicle to talk about topics important to us such as sexiest Final Fantasy character, religious indoctrination, best Star Trek holodeck episodes, and colonialism.
Lexi works full time in education and I’m a stay-at-home parent with two young children. I think we started the podcast because it was the millennial thing to do during the pandemic and we’d both made enough sourdough. We’ve kept it going because it’s nice to talk with a friend once a week-- or in my case, an adult.
My name is Ivan and I'm the author of The Program audio series, a fiction podcast that has received 450,000 downloads so far and a segment of which was broadcast on CBC. The Program is a sci-fi anthology fans have described as "a love child of public radio and Black Mirror". So far I have released 23 episodes, each of which is a standalone story set in the same world in which Money, State, and God fused into a single entity called the Program. My main motivation was the show was to create thoughtful, moving stories, and I'm proud to say that over 90 Canadian actors, musicians, and other collaborators have joined me on this journey so far. You can find out more at www.programaudioseries.com
Hi Kattie! Thanks for creating "Pod The North". It's nice to have a Canadian-focused perspective on the podcast field.
I'm the host/producer of the "Coaching Kids Curling" podcast. My mission to is give advice, resources and inspiration to fellow youth curling coaches and program organizers. I started the podcast in April 2020 as a pandemic project. I wanted to help other coaches and organizers in my sport; I didn't feel like there were enough resources for youth coaches like me. Basically, I asked myself: "What would have helped me as a newbie coach/organizer?" Then I put it in a podcast format.
91 episodes later, I'm still learning, but I found that I'm re-using the skills I learned as a journalism student back in the 1990s. I don't expect to make this a career, but I'd like to improve my podcasting skills and make enough money to pay for my expenses. I consider my podcast the niche-iest of podcasts (!) but I'm happy to serve my audience.
Took early retirement from a decent government gig (with the CBC) to open a boutique podcast company. It's gone pretty well. My first series was nominated for a Canpod (Kootenay Time) and now I'm doing branded podcasts to pay the bills while working on a regional series about where I live.
Thanks for your posts, they are informative and it's just nice to know there are others out there trying to make a career of this. I've found it both exciting and stressful.
Hello and thank you for the opportunity to share! I live in Southern Ontario.
Chronic Pain Care is broken. From a professional and societal lack of understanding of how chronic pain affects their daily lives to a system that focuses solely on the biological issues (we are more than just tissues), there are many gaps for the community to fill in on their own. So I have created a transformational online space for our chronic pain community to truly learn about pain, grow their pain management tool kit, and get back to living...all with the help of other amazing warriors. We do this with community, coaching and so much more!
I use my podcast 'The Chronic Pain Experience' to tell stories of recovery to inspire and interview experts to inform....aaaand maybe a little authority building too😁.
Hi Kattie, Thanks for asking this great question and giving us an opportunity to showcase ourselves. I'm in Eastern Ontario.
I Host and producer of the Resourceful Designer podcast, one of the longest running podcasts in the design category. I share advice and resources to help graphic/web designers start, run and grow their home-based design business. I've been in the design industry for over 30 years and running my own design business since 2005. Resourceful Designer celebrates 7 years on September 30th. This is my way of giving back to my fellow designers. https://resourcefuldesigner.com
I also host several TV Fan podcasts on my network, Solo Talk Media, http://solotalkmedia.com, my most recent show covers The Rings Of Power currently airing on Amazon Prime.
And I run Podcast Branding, where I help podcasters with professionally designed logos, cover artwork and websites for their show. I've helped brand over 400 podcasts and have spoken at Podcast Movement and PodFest Expo on the importance of the visual side of your show. After all, they see you before they hear you. https://podcastbranding.co
Hi Mark! I'm a regular listener of the "School of Podcasting" podcast and I recognize your name and company from the ads on that show. It's always funny when he says "He's Canadian, so you know he's polite" :-)
Hi Kattie! First of all, thanks so much for creating the newsletter, it's been a delight so far.
I host / produce a podcast called the Liveaboard Sailing Podcast, where I chat with people who live, work and travel on their sailboats around the world. It's very niche, but it's become fairly popular in the sailing world over the last year and a bit. My 'message' isn't all important or grand, I started the podcast to learn more about the lifestyle in order to learn more for myself - and it turned out there are a lot of people who were wondering the same things as I was! So it's kind of a service to this very niche and adventurous community of people who either live or want to live on their sailboats and travel the world while doing that.

Hi! My friend Jon Buda and I started a podcast about building a software company, right from the time we signed our partnership docs.
Our mission was to show people they could build a sustainable, "calm" company, without having to raise millions in venture capital:
https://saas.transistor.fm/
4 years later, and we accomplished it! We went full-time on Transistor in 2019, and now have two other employees working with us.
